According to Naval Ravikant, the 5 most important skills are:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Arithmetic
  • Persuasion
  • Programming

If you can acquire these skills, you’re set for life.

I’m convinced that everyone should start with writing and everything will follow.

Here are 3 reasons why you should start writing online:

Online Writing forces you to think and learn

The internet teaches you to be lazy.

You consume everything that is presented to you on social media. You look up things in Google and move on. You watch videos and forget about it.

It’s hard to make time to think when you are busy with other things going on in your life — you have a job, chores to finish, and take care of a thousand other things.

So everything you consume and everything that happens to you becomes less relevant.

Writing forces you to reflect because you need to have something to write about. These topics would be what you consume or your personal experiences. Your learnings from both will not be clear to you until you sit down and articulate.

Learning how to write is learning how to think.

Leads to opportunities that will surprise you

I’ll admit that the main reason why I started writing online is to make money.

I wasn’t wrong — it led to many opportunities, albeit not instantly. Writing is a skill that takes time to develop but the good thing about publishing online is that you always attract opportunities. Somewhere out there, someone needs to read what you wrote.

The more you write, the more opportunities await.

It’s an underrated path to self-improvement
